Social housing in the Brisbane suburb of Logan is set to see an overhaul, with the state government planning on increasing affordable real estate in the area.

The Logan Renewal Initiative is a joint operation between the Queensland government and Logan City Council, with the housing minister announcing that three consortiums have been shortlisted for the project.

Minister Tim Mander said the organisations have now been asked to submit proposals for how they would revitalise social housing in the area.

He explained: "This is about creating mixed communities, providing better support for our tenants and addressing the high density of social housing in certain areas.

"Thanks to the neglect of the former government, we have a shortage of suitable properties and the ones we do have are clustered in a handful of suburbs."

This initiative looks to address the shortage by providing a mixture of private, affordable and social accommodation options.

The aim is to also ensure that tenants have access to services they need to stay.

It's expected that the selected business will be announced in the middle of this year, with Mirvac Queensland, Compass Housing Services and a consortium of Brisbane Housing Company and Horizon Housing Company, all in the running.
