Victorians in need of affordable housing may be pleased by the recent announcement from the Department of Housing and Homelessness.

The government has delivered 17,800 homes through its Social Housing Initiative (SHI), having already exceeded its original target and expecting to deliver more by the end of this year.

Minister for housing and homelessness Brendan O'Connor pointed out that the SHI project is the largest investment of its kind in Australia's history, valued at $5.6 billion.

"As a result of the great work being carried out across Australia, many disadvantaged people who were homeless or at risk of homelessness now have homes," said Mr O'Connor.

"Another major component of this initiative has been the work carried out to repair and maintain more than 80,000 existing social housing properties, 12,000 which would otherwise not be liveable."

The announcement is a big step toward addressing some of the disparities currently faced by certain groups of Australians and comes as welcome relief to the many areas facing a housing shortage.

Significant amounts of the people who will occupy these homes were once at risk of being homeless, highlighting the positive impact of the initiative.
