We recently sat down with the youngest principal in our Western Australia network, Cameron Smart of Ray White Cannington, to find out his experience and thoughts on the Young Principals Forum 2014 held in Melbourne in early December.
How many young principals attended?
There were about 60 people in total, from all across Australasia, WA, SA, QLD, NSW, VIC, and NZ.
What topics were discussed?
Topics were broad and varied. From recruitment, retention, and attraction within the business, to leadership, profitability, activity and performance, and social media. What was really inspiring and resonated with the guests was the case studies of not quite ‘rags to riches’ businesses, but certainly businesses that were up against the ropes and fought hard to stay afloat. Those businesses are now leading real estate offices not just in Ray White, but throughout Australia.
Were there any other interesting activities on the agenda?
The most interesting part was listening to what the case studies had to say about their development and what they do differently. The insights from Brian White’s personal experience in the industry was also a highlight – particularly how he has been a part of, and witnessed courage and change in the thinking of the people within the industry and the group to allow the emergence of market leaders.
What aspect of the conference did you feel was most valuable?
Although I found all of the topics covered very beneficial, the most valuable part for me was being able to bounce ideas off other young principals who are of similar age and thought process. Finding out what works for them and what doesn’t, what they do differently to us and others in my local marketplace, getting those ideas and being able to use them to gain the edge over our competition. Also having the camaraderie that encourages personal growth was something that I was surprised by – there are people in our group you may have never met before yet are willing to share their ideas and give you feedback to help you succeed, they genuinely want to see you grow and do well.
What would your advice be to other young aspiring principals?
Listen to people, whether it be buyers, sellers, landlords, tenants or staff. Listening to their thoughts and concerns is one of the most valuable things you can do. If you actively listen, you will be able to effectively handle the situation.
Cameron is a great example of the next generation coming through our network and one we hope to be able to relay more great stories in the future.
