With bold, artistic accents throughout, the owners of 43 Toronto Street, Ovingham, have created an eclectic home fit for the likes of Monet or Matisse.

A historic bluestone cottage, built in 1890 and renovated over time, this art house is unlike anything on the market today, Ray White Adelaide Selling Principal, Brett Pilgrim said.

The house itself, re-designed by prominent South Australian architect, Rick Bzowy, was a blank canvas when a dramatic renovation was completed in 1987.

“The previous owners were keen artists and put their stamp on the property, from ceiling murals to an expressive glass feature splash back in the award-winning Jag kitchen, there were quirks at every turn,” Mr Pilgrim said.

The light-filled art studio is the creative hub of the home now, with views to a sweeping alfresco terrace and lush gardens the perfect muse.

Set in arguably one of the most popular suburbs in Adelaide right now - Ovingham is an exclusive pocket between Fitzroy and Prospect - and just minutes from the CBD and trendy North Adelaide, this home lends itself to cosmopolitan living.

“Old meets new here, it’s all formal out the front and fun out the back, integrating the history through sandstone walls with contemporary finishes,” Mr Pilgrim said.

Current owners, Sharon and Hans Hogenhout have taken the home into the 21st century, while still paying homage to the historic aspects of the property. Keeping the creative theme within the house alive, the family also run a house painting business from their home. However, a desired tree-change will see them put their masterpiece up for sale and relocate to the Adelaide Hills.

Mrs Hogenhout said the 802sqm home had wow factor and would be hard to part with.

“There are so many features, you literally can’t take your eyes off anything, it’s such a surprise package, there’s even a chicken coop,” she said.

“A formal front entrance welcomes and as you go through the house, you really start to feel the sense of fun the architect was trying to create,” she said.

Features abound including Tasmanian Oak flooring throughout, lavish room sizes, established herb and vegetable gardens, and a rainwater tank for sustainable living.
