Real estate in Brisbane has received a boost after an affordable housing project was unveiled today (February 26) in the city's north.
A $21 million dollar BHC development in Chermside was showcased by Queensland housing and public works minister Tim Mander.
The 84-unit development, known as Quadrant Apartments, consists of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, as well as nine units that are designed for senior citizens or disabled people.
The minister explained that this project is very important as it addresses a serious need.
"With over 23,000 applications on the waiting list for social housing, it is more important than ever to have effective partnerships between the government and the community housing sector," he said.
"Thanks to the negligence of the former government, we have too many social housing properties that are old fashioned, expensive to maintain, and unsuitable for the small households who make up the majority of the waiting list."
Mr Mander insisted that the BHC project goes a long way to "putting things right".
Of the 84 that are on offer, 40 units will be available for purchase or rent through the federal government's National Rental Affordability Scheme, while the other 44 will be rented out through BHC.
