Sustainability has become a more prominent factor in the search for real estate in recent times - energy efficiency, green technology and environmental impact reports are increasingly weighted in individual decisions to pass or buy.

It is therefore fitting that some Australian policy makers are taking the next step toward improving the future - by implementing supportive monitoring systems, such as Sydney's movement to measure its sustainable 'health'.

The City of Sydney Council is working with the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology and the McCaughey Research Centre at the University of Melbourne to develop the new community indicators framework.

Lord mayor Clover Moore was pleased to report on the project last week (July 6) and ensured that it would continue on an ongoing basis.

"These indicators will help us track the progress, wellbeing and sustainability of our communities, and the progress we're making through our Sustainable Sydney 2030 program," she said.

"The results will be compared against other major cities, including London, New York, Paris, Barcelona, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Milan, Madrid, Auckland and capital cities across Australia - to ensure Sydney remains on par with or better than the rest of the world."
