The Western Australian government's appointment of Michael Mischin as the new minister for commerce has been welcomed by the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia (REIWA).

In a new-look cabinet in the recently re-elected Barnett government, Mr Mischin will fill the role of commerce minister and attorney general.

REIWA president David Airey thanked the outgoing minister, Simon O'Brien, for his service to the portfolio and for his involvement in the pending changes to the Residential Tenancies Act.

Mr Airey said that he is looking forward to getting to know Mr Mischin and continue the positive working relationship with the state government.

"As the newly appointed commerce minister, Mr Mischen will have the task of implementing changes to the RTA and making sure proposed regulations covering locks and latches on rental properties are introduced smoothly," he explained.

Bill Marmion has also been retained as head of the housing portfolio, having held the position since 2010, with Mr Airey saying that he and the minister are of one mind when it comes to dealing with housing affordability for first home buyers.

On the agenda over the next four years, the REIWA boss added, was to see stamp duty reformed, reduce pressure on the rental properties system and foster construction growth in conjunction with a growing population.
