It's what's known as The Newcastle Urban Renewal Strategy - a long term plan to reboot New South Wales' second largest city and generate $1 billion in economic activity.
The plan by the state government will see a number of initiatives implemented in the hope of revitalising the region and bolstering real estate value.
One key reform is to drive connectivity between the central business district (CBD) and its bustling waterfront.
In addition, other key plans include cutting the heavy rail line between Newcastle and Wickham, a rapid bus system to cater to new destinations, a transport interchange at Wickham and defining precincts in Civic and the West and East Ends.
West End will be the defining commercial district for the Newcastle regions.
Also, there are plans for multiple crossings to connect the CBD with the foreshore, new planning systems to incentivise the construction of residential and commercial developments and completely redo Hunter Street to improve bike and footpaths and flora along the strip.
By 2036, the implementation of this strategy would see over 12,000 more residents and 10,000 more workers in the area.
The Newcastle Urban Renewal Strategy will be open for public comment until March next year.
