WELL KNOWN Brisbane Valley landscape artist and architect Bruce Buchanan is selling his Glamorgan Vale property called The Miskin after 31 years.

The property at 893 Glamorgan Vale Road sits in the lifestyle acreage belt near Ipswich, popular with people seeking a tree change but not too far from the city.

Mr Buchanan designed his contemporary homestead to be a “modern representation of a traditional Brisbane Valley farmhouse”.

In addition to the main house and Mr Buchanan’s 100sq m fully air-conditioned and carpeted art studio is a beautiful old Lutheran Church, first built in 1881 and relocated in 1997 from nearby Hatton Vale.

The church elders were delighted with its new location at Glamorgan Vale and held a de-consecration ceremony for its new use.

“I was driving by and they were having an auction - so I bought the chapel and it has been a wonderful addition on our property here. In fact our teenagers and their friends used it as their games room all the time” he said.

“On one occasion it was hired for a country wedding and the marriage celebrant asked if we could make it available on a regular basis.

“Having been an architect for most of my working life, I am naturally attracted to the structure, form, perspective, scale and detail of buildings.”

Mr Buchanan, a well known local architect turned full time painter, won numerous state and national architecture awards for his design work which specialised in heritage conservation and adaptive reuse.

“I designed our house to look like a country house with a steep roof. It’s a very simple structure with plenty of open plan living space which works well. It’s an uncomplicated design that served us well,” Mr Buchanan said.

“It’s a big downsizing exercising now for me and I am moving on, reluctantly in some ways, but we had 31 very good years here until my wife passed away recently.

“We’ve had horses and cattle, and we farmed deer for 12 years. It’s been the most wonderful peaceful place to paint here too.”

After retiring from his Ipswich-based architecture practice about seven years ago, painting became a second career for Mr Buchanan.

Mr Buchanan is a realist landscape painter recognised as a master watercolourist whose work focuses on natural and man-made landscapes and often a combination of both.

“There are recurring themes which never fail to interest me. Having been an architect for most of my working life, I am naturally attracted to the structure, form, perspective, scale and detail of buildings," he said.

“The combination of man-made structures with natural landscape features in a lot of my work, as do slices and details of walls, windows, brickwork and plumbing, where they contribute to a dynamic and memorable image.

“I am unlikely to paint iconic landmarks, preferring modest workaday buildings than can be seen in a different light.

“Industrial buildings, sheds, grain silos and structures also feature, often for their sculptural qualities which often turn into studies of form and shadow - the way the light turns into shadow on cylindrical surfaces for instance.

“As a full time artist, I think my art is strongly influenced by history and a sense of place.”

The semi-rural acreage is for sale for $1.1M through Ray White Lowood agent Victoria Bateman.

“The house is designed to sit easily in the countryside and take advantage of the natural beauty of the area. This Bruce has achieved. The studio on the property is where Bruce creates his wonderful award winning paintings and for me is a delight to view as it’s crammed full with his artwork,” Ms Bateman said.

The four bedroom house sits on a well cleared 20ha of stunning softly rolling hills, positioned to showcase the natural beauty of the area from all bedrooms and main living areas.

Ms Bateman said the 100sqm studio and a historic country church both had excellent potential to host events, or provide additional self-contained accommodation for extended family.

The property is 15 minutes to Ipswich and 45 minutes to Brisbane CBD.
