“The Point” in New Zealand’s secluded Opito Bay has come to market with Ray White Whitianga.

In the family since 1949, owners Sue and husband Murray Edens will be sad to say goodbye, but recall fondly Sue's parents Skipper and Joyce Chapman's story of riding in on horseback to take over a property that had not been lived in for 10 years, with no running water or even power. Back then, Black Jack road was all clay, and the pair only had one neighbour.

They began to develop the farm 10 years after purchase, and each year a large veggie garden would be planted. The Edens quickly became known for their generosity, with the mantra: “you’re only poor when you have nothing to give away,” while swiftly giving away sacks of potatoes, kumara, half a hogget and much more of their produce.

Located a 3 and a half hour drive from Auckland, the significantly vast beachfront property has several consents in place for various developments, including approval for architect designed residential dwellings.
“The Point” which has a Capital Value (2014) of $24.775 million across four titles, incorporates consent for a 76 or 79 Lot development with additional consent to construct three other exclusive houses on other titles. The property has been listed for enquiries above $35 million due to the unique attributes and opportunities it offers in the numerous consents.

“There is never a right time to sell, just that some times are better than others. We are now in our 60’s and the farming future of our children is probably not best suited on this property,” said Murray Edens.

Sue Edens added that the decision to market the property was obviously challenging for the family to make, “I grew up as a child on the property when Opito Bay was an isolated bay at the end of a clay road. This is the result of 4 generations of family personal sacrifice, triumphs and tragedies over the last 70 years.”
