Originally purchased in 1880 and operating as the St Bede’s Anglican Parish rectory since 1912, 243 Military Road, Semaphore is on the market for the first time in 102 years.

A property rich in history, the land was first purchased by Alfred LeMessurier, a prominent figure in the South Australian timber industry.
“The LeMessurier family were heavily involved in the development of Port Adelaide.

“LeMessurier built the existing residence in 1890. He designed and constructed a return verandah villa built of dry creek bluestone. He used the best materials available at the time including leadlight windows, high timber skirtings, cedar shield back cupboards, marble fireplaces and baltic pine floors.

“Through a series of events, it became the rectory for St Bede’s Parish in September 1912,” Peter Kikianis, selling principal at Ray White Semaphore said.

Serving as the rectory for St Bede's Parish for more than a century, the iconic property has had around 12 Rectors reside in it between 1912 and 2014.

“This sale can only be described as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: this property is a prominent landmark in the Semaphore community,” Peter said.

The historic bluestone villa is positioned on a large corner allotment of approximately 925m². The home features five bedrooms, two bathrooms and formal lounge and dining rooms.

“The feature room of this grand residence is the enormous reception room, featuring a marble fireplace and high ornate ceilings as well as its own entry,” Peter explains.

Arguably one of the Peninsulas grandest homes, 243 Military Road, Semaphore goes to auction on 11 October 2014 onsite at 11am.
