An 1870 circa brick and sandstone cottage that has been in the same family for four generations has hit the market for the first time.

The property, named Spring Cottage, is one of the oldest houses in Brisbane and is renowned for its gardens.

“The garden at Spring Cottage is one of the 10 oldest in Brisbane. It is believed that the gardens have remained relatively untouched since they were first laid in the early 1900s.

“The only major work that is known of was in 2010 when the tenant, a qualified horticulturalist, helped to restore the garden’s original design,” Damon Warat, selling agent at Ray White Ascot said.

In the same family for four generations, the property is a good example of a mid-nineteenth century building.

“It’s a magnificent old building in a fantastic position with a view of the Brisbane river and city. Our grandmother was born in Spring Cottage so the home holds tremendous value to us as a family.”

“We hope that Spring Cottage goes to someone who loves it as much as we have over the years - someone with a genuine love for the heritage of the home,” the current owners of Spring Cottage said.

Spring Cottage, located at 40 Crescent Road, Hamilton, is listed on the Brisbane City Council Register.

“Spring Cottage is a significant part of Brisbane’s history and this is a truly rare offering,” Damon said.

“The cottage is in a premium area and is surrounded by some of Brisbane’s finest homes.

“The neighbouring property sold for $1.025 million in 2012 and we anticipate Spring Cottage will sell north of this figure,” Damon said.

Spring Cottage is for sale via Expressions of interest, closing on 22 July at 1pm.
