Michael Andrews is not your typical sales manager. The 30-year-old Southport man raised more than $8000 by clocking up 1000km on a gruelling week-long bike ride.

The funds are going towards the construction of a local autism centre, which can support up to 40 Gold Coast children.

Mr Andrews said while the the ride was challenging, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of
his life. ‘‘We rode for about 8-10 hours a day,’’ he said. ‘‘Knowing what we were raising the money for got me through the ride.

‘‘It was nothing in comparison to what families who have sick children have to deal with every day.’’ Mr Andrews made up a group
of Ray White Surfers Paradise riders who recently rode for a week across northern NSW and southeast Queensland.
The ride, organised by charity group Chain Reaction, has raised $8.5 million since 2007.
