One of Kiama’s oldest homes, Rothbury Estate is on the market, an elevated five-bedroom house on over 1000 square metres in the centre of town.

Currently leased for $720 per week as two large apartments, the property was built in the 1900s and was once home to some of Kiama’s most renowned figures, including the Cocks and Hindmarsh families.

The property’s vendor and Order of Australia recipient, Robert Cameron bought it with his wife Paula in 1978 as their first home and while they have since moved away for work, kept it for nostalgic reasons.

“It was our first home as a married couple and we just loved living there. It genuinely has a lovely feel,” Mr Cameron said, adding that they are sad to let it go but they are now retired and the time has come.

“You are right in the heart of a genuine coastal town and yet it’s whisper quiet looking out over the ocean while among the trees,” he said, adding that Kiama Primary School is across the road and the high school a short walk away.

Selling agent, Sharon Ford from Ray White Kiama said the property is steeped in history and character. Period features include original fireplaces, ornate ceilings and bull nose verandas.

“I am quite passionate about this property. As soon as you walk in you can feel the history. It’s such a beautiful house and has enormous potential,” Ms Ford said, adding that despite its history it is not heritage listed and has attracted a wide range of buyers.

“It would suit someone that’s in love with the old-style charm. The two apartments could easily be converted back into one grand home.

Investors have also shown plenty of interest according to Ms Ford, due to the excellent rent potential from the two apartments, while developers are also watching the property closely.

“It is a very rare offering in Kiama. It has two driveways accesses while over 1000 square metres in the centre of town is almost unheard of,” Ms Ford said.

“Combine that with the warm, elevated sunny aspect, wonderful water views and the property’s historic charm and it’s no wonder there is plenty of interest.”

Asked about price expectations for the 6 June Auction, Ms Ford said it is difficult to tell given the unique nature of the property, but cited similar recent sales ranging from $1 million to $1.3 million.
