The Northern Territory government has announced they are searching for land to develop real estate in Darwin.

Minister for lands, planning and the environment Peter Chandler explained that Sports House at Fannie Bay is the site of potential development, with the Country Liberals first earmarking the area for residential real estate use in 2008.

"The 1.45-hectare site is among several sites currently being identified by the territory government to deliver housing to Territorians as quickly as possible.

"Given the deteriorating state of Sports House, the Northern Territory government will work together with tenants to find new locations if redevelopment was to occur."

Mr Chandler explained that the government is addressing the territory's need to see an increased supply for housing.

It comes as the territory government is expecting an additional 75,000 people (or a 65 per cent increase) to move into Darwin over the next 15 years, according to The Australian.

As a result, Darwin is presented with a problem where housing stocks are nowhere near adequate, while the land isn't available to provide real estate - therefore, the need for the government to announce agendas such as the Fannie Bay development.
