Just recently I came across an interesting fact. The national animal of Scotland is - you guessed it, the Unicorn. Armed with this information, I decided to ask a Scotsman whether unicorns do in fact exist. So, I approached one of my colleagues - an intelligent and well-respected chartered accountant.
“Hey Ross, do unicorns exist?“ I asked.
Without hesitation Ross replied “Yes, of course they do”.
This got me thinking.
Is the Unicorn, a highly desired mythical creature symbolising purity and rarity, a metaphor for our goals, that elusive deal or perhaps a far-reaching project we hope to realise? Is the existence of the Unicorn a matter of perspective? Or is it simply just some silly made up creature?
I personally believe that the majority of us do chase that metaphoric Unicorn in one way or another, and so we should. Believing that we can do or achieve an almost unrealistic goal is what drives us, motivates us and keeps us moving forward.
Some of the lucky people actually capture their Unicorn. Others chose not to believe in what’s possible.
A bit like the law of attraction and the power of positive thinking, I for one am now a believer in the metaphoric Unicorn. For me the Unicorn represents that wildly audacious goal that I hope to achieve someday, that thing I strive for.
I hope you too have a Unicorn that you’re chasing, if you don’t, ask yourself - what is that one thing that will really make a difference? Name your Unicorn, think about it daily and then stay the course and do your best to capture that beautiful thing!
