The property at 96 Greenwood Park Road, Auburn, which was once a barren paddock for sheep, now features three bedrooms, two bathrooms and views of a sprawling 5.3-hectare vineyard.

Ray White Clare Valley agent Mark O’Meagher is marketing the property, which is being sold via private treaty, and with a price guide between $2.2 million to $2.4 million.

Mr O’Meagher said the lifestyle property was in the heart of the famous Clare Valley with only a short drive to the Clare and Auburn townships.

Owners John Bastian and partner Rosemary have “mixed feelings” about selling their much-loved masterpiece which has a vineyard behind the house, where they grow riesling and fiano, and is used by Pike Wines to create award-winning wines.

Mr Bastian, a company director, said in the 1980s, when they lived in Darwin they had often admired homes designed by Troppo Architects.

After years of looking for a place to build their dream home, they called on Troppo Architects to create an environmentally-friendly east-facing house with views of the surrounding vineyards.

While construction of their house took place from 2002 to 2004, Mr Bastian said the architects were given free reign to design the property which was built around a man-made lake.

The property has since attracted around 30 species of birds, ducks and water birds and around 25 breeding turtles, and four species of frogs, Mr Bastian said.

Mr Bastian, who already owns a property in North Adelaide, said it was time for someone else to enjoy the stunning views and surrounding vineyards.

“It would appeal to those in the capital city looking for a nice weekend getaway,” he said.

“Even a retiring farmer from the area or someone looking to dabble with the vineyard. You could run it yourself, or continue with the lease, or create something else.”
