Every year there is an influx of students in search of accommodation near colleges and universities.

For this reason, financiers may want to take note of where Australian universities ranked in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) list released this month.

These results may provide a greater demand for housing in these areas - particularly rental properties in and around the central business districts in these cities.

A total of five of Australian universities made it onto the ARWU top 100 list.

The University of Melbourne placed the highest at number 57, followed by the Australian National University at 64, the University of Queensland at 90, University of Sydney three spots behind at 93, and finally the University of Western Australia at 96.

Australia was one of two countries which managed to increase the number of universities it had on the top 100 list this year.

Chief executive of Universities Australia Belinda Robinson said: "This is an outstanding result for Australia and demonstrates the nation's commitment to having a world class university system providing teaching and research at the highest levels."

Student accommodation can provide lucrative opportunities for a well-placed real estate investment.
