There is a special place in Australian hearts for the town of Tenterfield, the wistful and heartfelt lyrics of Peter Allen’s 1970s song an anthem to life in a country town.

For those who dream of that country life; of small towns and big hearts consider an auction taking place this weekend.

Ray White Tenterfield is auctioning the historic Mason Lodge Building this weekend. A building whose history dates back to July 2, 1877 and includes notes that a builder’s tender of 276 pounds was accepted to erect the temple building.

The building maintains its striking presence to this day, as it faces only its third sale in over a century.

The block of land is large at 2,023sqm and fronts Rouse Street, while inside are timber floors, soaring pressed metal ceilings and 'restroom' facilities.

– But it’s the façade that brings a smile to people’s faces.

It currently is occupied by The Unicorn Horn Emporium, a sort of rural antiques store – filled with all kinds of historical bits and bobs, all of which will be sold immediately after the hammer falls on the 9.00am auction.

Then people from all over will then mill around and look at pieces of history, and offer a few dollars for trinkets of a town, a town with a story.

Perhaps, just perhaps among all those pieces will be a humble saddler’s tools.
